Today in our worship at Sunnyside Mennonite Church, the Old Testament reading will be from the prophet Haggai.  When I read this passage, my mind immediately goes to Handel’s Messiah.  Early in the first section of Handel’s magnum opus, the bass soloist holds forth.  The prophecy of salvation, the coming of the Messiah, and what it portends to the world at large are profoundly captured in the runs of the bass recitativo accompagnato.  It is like the music itself is communicating the rumbling…the shaking.

Grace and peace to all who worship the One who is gathering the treasures of all the nations to his Temple.
