I saw Jesus last night…

I saw Jesus last night.
He was sitting
by the Jenga blocks on the floor
playing with a baby-
the daughter of an unwed teenage mother.
I have never seen the father,
but young mom has her hands full
with two children under
the age of two.
I saw Jesus
making time for this baby
holding the baby
playing with the baby.
I saw Jesus caring for
the [...]

U2: blurring the line between the sacred and the profane…

Bono, Larry, and The Edge had become involved in the Shalom fellowship.  They were just twenty years old and had discovered their faith amid an enflamed charismatic revival.  Questions of ego and fame and the seemingly trivial pursuit of rock music were beginning to arise.  There seemed to be a wind of change within the [...]

Gospel word pictures…

Kingdom Grace posted a number of wonderful pictures which are representative of key words in the emergent church conversation as well as many other parts of the Church.  They are words inherent to Gospel living.
I re-post them here with a HT to Kingdom Grace.  I also found the comments exchanged in response to her pictures [...]

A lenten fast…

Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training….  Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air.  No, I beat my body and make it my slave….                                 1 Corinthians 9:25-27
Lent begins next week.  Easter is early this year–March 23 in Western Christianity.  Thinking [...]

Feast of the Nativity…

This icon of the Lord’s Nativity is explained here.  I want to focus in on the depiction of Joseph.  Here is the explanation of what is happening in the part of the icon with Joseph:
St Joseph the Betrothed (bottom left), seeing his affliction and bewilderment over this most strange and divine birth;. He is shown [...]

Snow

Snow
Snow,
blessed snow,
comes out of the sky
like bleached flies.
The ground is no longer naked.
The ground has on its clothes.
The trees poke out of sheets
and each branch wears the sock of God.
There is hope.
There is hope everywhere.
I bite it.
Someone once said:
Don’t bite till you know
if it’s bread or stone.
What I bit is all bread,
rising, yeasty as [...]

What is this place…

What is this place where we are meeting?  Only a house, the earth its floor,
walls and a roof sheltering people, windows for light, an open door.
Yet it becomes a body that lives when we are gathered here,
and know our God is near.

Advent 1

Advent 1 Meditation

Almighty God, give all of us grace to cast away the works of darkness, and put on the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which your Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in [...]

Fractal grace…

a misty dusk settles
over shiny ochre leaves
in my yard
the annual raking ritual
has cleared all but a few
to their autumnal bed…
to compost
.

the shrowded
late November afternoon light
shimmers against silhouetted tree
branches stripped
of their seasonal hue
.

the still, musty air
holds a truth
whispered by leaves
fallen on loamy soil
.

what is this mystical truth?
.

letting go
of what has been,
life
this year
embracing
beautiful decay,
that which is to come…
is good
.

the moment is…
mysterious,
peaceful
—-
what mystery
is uncovered by this [...]

Every common bush…

Earth’s crammed with heaven,
And every common bush afire with God,
But only he who sees takes off his shoes;
The rest sit round it and pluck blackberries.
–Elizabeth Barrett Browning
