Our Father chant…

At Deep Shift in the Bronx we did a chant of The Lord’s Prayer.  You can find the lyrics for this version and an explanation for how to do the chant here.  I really appreciated this way of saying the prayer.  Another aspect of our worship during that weekend which I really appreciated was the [...]

Professor Mohammad Yunus

I heard an inspiring talk last night given by Nobel Laureate, Mohammad Yunus.  He had never been to Lancaster before, but in his opening remarks he mentioned Mennonite Central Committee.  He expressed appreciation for the tremendous work MCC has done in Bangladesh.
I was struck by the amazing work Dr. Yunus is doing.  The hopeful way [...]

Circuit training…

I have not felt like blogging recently.  Here are some highlights in this week’s curriculum vitae:
Friday, April 25:  I went to hear Willard Swartley at the Parish Resource Center.  The topic was “Teaching and Preaching on War and Peace.”  He was very good.  Dr. Bob Webber provided a response.  Some good exchange.  I need to [...]

When you transplant a lilac bush…

I don’t know how it is for you, but I find that neighbors can live in proximate anonymity.  Like trees growing in a stand of woods, we are privy to each others movements, yet strangers to each others private worlds.
O, there is the occasional exchange of pleasantries on the way to get the newspaper, to [...]

The Private Jesus versus the Communal Jesus: Some (ecclesial) observations…

It was heartening to see the Southern Baptists changing their position on global warming.   The story that broke on Monday reports that forty-six influential members of the Southern Baptist Convention, including three of its past four presidents, criticized their denomination for being “too timid” in confronting global warming.  It is encouraging to see the Church able to change, [...]

Tony Jones a Smurf!?

Mark Van Steenwyk offers this effective use of satyr.  A healthy dose of humor seems like a good elixer for this rainy Friday afternoon.
Along the same vein…did you hear that Hillary Clinton is a Muslim?

A story of radical inclusion (John 4)…

A story on the front page of our local paper caught my attention last Saturday.  The headline annouced that Alabama judge Roy Moore (of 10 commandments in the courtroom renown) is joining the fight in a Pennsylvania case over hate crimes law.  Two local evangelists for Repent America were charged under the hate crimes law for [...]

Creating a missional order…

In a number of settings recently at SMC, I have been asked about vision for church as a missional community (I am particularly thinking of Melissa’s questions).  I feel like I have not yet done justice to answering these questions. It involves a radical re-imagining of church. It doesn’t mean we change the center from historic [...]

The Scandal of Evangelical Politics…

Ron Sider has a new book (see excerpt here) that looks like an important read.  I also found this endorsement by Scot McKnight for the upcoming conference at Eastern University.
After observing the divisiveness of the 2004 election season, even within Mennonite congregations, John Roth proposed that Mennonites take a 5-year sabbatical from political engagement.  I was a delegate [...]
