Professor Mohammad Yunus

I heard an inspiring talk last night given by Nobel Laureate, Mohammad Yunus.  He had never been to Lancaster before, but in his opening remarks he mentioned Mennonite Central Committee.  He expressed appreciation for the tremendous work MCC has done in Bangladesh.
I was struck by the amazing work Dr. Yunus is doing.  The hopeful way [...]

Circuit training…

I have not felt like blogging recently.  Here are some highlights in this week’s curriculum vitae:
Friday, April 25:  I went to hear Willard Swartley at the Parish Resource Center.  The topic was “Teaching and Preaching on War and Peace.”  He was very good.  Dr. Bob Webber provided a response.  Some good exchange.  I need to [...]

Learning to see the world the way God does…

I have been reading a book that Jon passed along to me–Get Up Off Your Knees:  Preaching the U2 Catalog.  Today I read “To See What You See:  On Liturgy & Learning & Life,” Steven Garber, Calvin College.  The Biblical reference is Psalm 123.  The U2 song reference is “When I Look At The World.”
As [...]

How the World sees America…

I sat down to eat my lunch today and turned the TV on to C-SPAN2.  Amar Bakshi was in the middle of a press conference speaking about his project- How the World sees America.  This fascinating project took him on a 5-month trip to 11 countries around the world.  Bakshi is a reporter for the [...]

Your Kingdom come, your will be done on Earth…

The Other:  Postmodern shorthand for anyone differing in any way from “us,” born of the reality that in an era of radical pluralism and globalization, we are constantly confronted with people who are indeed different from us.
Tony Jones, The New Christians:  Dispatches from the Emergent Frontier
Jesus and the Kingdom, Brian McLaren
Can you imagine a community [...]

Nap time ritual…

Sometimes I get to put our youngest to bed for an afternoon nap.  Hollyn usually wants me to read the same three books.  Going to the Zoo, Hey, Pancakes! and A Bad Case of Stripes.  There is something comforting about this ritual.  We know the narrative, but we are drawn into the familiar rhythm of the words…pictures.  [...]

The Future Lies in the Past…

Here is an excerpt from a story in the most recent issue of Christianity Today.  The article is entitled…

The Future Lies in the Past
Why evangelicals are connecting with the early church as they move into the 21st century.

From Dallas Willard, Richard Foster, and living, practicing monks and nuns, they must learn both the strengths and the [...]

The problem in postmodern society from a Christian perspective…

G.K Chesterton once entered a public debate on the state of the nation by writing a letter to The Times.  In response to the question of what was wrong with the world he wrote this:
                                         Dear Sir, I am.
A prayer for the Church…
Lord,
Help us in our weakness and inadequacy to understand the ways in which [...]

Gospel word pictures…

Kingdom Grace posted a number of wonderful pictures which are representative of key words in the emergent church conversation as well as many other parts of the Church.  They are words inherent to Gospel living.
I re-post them here with a HT to Kingdom Grace.  I also found the comments exchanged in response to her pictures [...]

Reflections on Evangelicals and global warming…

photo:  Retreating glacier in Glacier National Park.  First photo taken in 1911.  Second photo from 2000.  Other warning signs of global warming are captured in photos here.
I wonder why many Evangelicals are wary and even cynical toward the idea of global warming.  I get the impression that many Evangelicals think it is all some big [...]
