The Politics of Jesus…

Which side wins—Democrat or Republican, East or West, elite or bourgeois or proletariat, Herodian or Zealot—may be considered news within the system, but until someone brings into the system resources from outside it, unless someone kicks a hole in the wall of the system so we aren’t trapped within it, there is no real good [...]

Called by name…

Listen to me, all of you in far-off lands!  The LORD called me before my birth; from within the womb he called me by name.  Isaiah 49:1
I have been meditating on this verse as I prepare to preach Sunday.  A recurring theme in the lectionary texts for Sunday is that of being named by God.  [...]

Women in the Gospels…

Yesterday was week one of two weeks of looking at Biblical interpretation and women in leadership at SMC.  This is a six-week study we are doing during the Sunday School hour with all the adult classes combined.  I gave out yellow and red cards to each person (soccer system)–told people to book me if I [...]

Pauline theology of women and church leadership…

“I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a minister (diakonos) of the church at Cenchreae, so that you may welcome her in the Lord as is fitting for the saints, and help her in whatever she may require from you, for she has been a benefactor of many and of myself as well.

always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
        submitting to one [...]

Keep, O Lord, your household the Church in your steadfast faith and love, that through your grace each of us may proclaim your truth with boldness, and minister your justice with compassion; for the sake of our Savior Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for [...]

Jesus challenges traditional gender roles of Jewish culture…

Another excerpt from the chapter, “Jesus Broke Down Walls”, by David Hamilton:
In closing, we’ll look at one more significant encounter Jesus had with a woman.  It’s sort of a strange story, but it demonstrates how Jesus challenged the traditional gender roles of that culture.  In their place He created a heavenly standard by which all [...]

Women in missions, ministry and leadership…

I am reading Why Not Women?  A Fresh Look at Scripture on Women in Missions, Ministry, and Leadership.  The book is co-authored by Loren Cunningham, the founder of YWAM, and David Joel Hamilton.  Lancaster Mennonite Conference is recommending the book as a resource for study on this issue.  I think I may do several posts [...]

BCTV…

Here are some pics from our trip to Kansas. More can be found here.
Went to Reading this afternoon to tape a show for BCTV at the invitation of Ira’s cousin, Calvin Kurtz. Father Demetrius and I talked about the dialogue three weeks ago and the ongoing conversation between Mennonites and Orthodoxy.
