I saw Jesus last night…

I saw Jesus last night.
He was sitting
by the Jenga blocks on the floor
playing with a baby-
the daughter of an unwed teenage mother.
I have never seen the father,
but young mom has her hands full
with two children under
the age of two.
I saw Jesus
making time for this baby
holding the baby
playing with the baby.
I saw Jesus caring for
the [...]

Snow

Snow
Snow,
blessed snow,
comes out of the sky
like bleached flies.
The ground is no longer naked.
The ground has on its clothes.
The trees poke out of sheets
and each branch wears the sock of God.
There is hope.
There is hope everywhere.
I bite it.
Someone once said:
Don’t bite till you know
if it’s bread or stone.
What I bit is all bread,
rising, yeasty as [...]

Fractal grace…

a misty dusk settles
over shiny ochre leaves
in my yard
the annual raking ritual
has cleared all but a few
to their autumnal bed…
to compost
.

the shrowded
late November afternoon light
shimmers against silhouetted tree
branches stripped
of their seasonal hue
.

the still, musty air
holds a truth
whispered by leaves
fallen on loamy soil
.

what is this mystical truth?
.

letting go
of what has been,
life
this year
embracing
beautiful decay,
that which is to come…
is good
.

the moment is…
mysterious,
peaceful
—-
what mystery
is uncovered by this [...]

Every common bush…

Earth’s crammed with heaven,
And every common bush afire with God,
But only he who sees takes off his shoes;
The rest sit round it and pluck blackberries.

Post Summer Thoughts…

Post Summer Thoughts

It’s in the air already
This well-known smell of
Something that’s about to pass
The heat of summer kissed away
By this fresh rainy autumn’s breath
A plaid of rusty colours covers grass
Ripe apples root and leaves
Already fall
All is about to die and
Yet to be reborn
From fruit to harvest
There is a life beyond
This life we know
As [...]

Both/And…Either/Or

I saw a story recently that indicated Mother Teresa struggled with her faith.  Doubts are part of the human condition.  It seems that the longer I live (even as a follower of Jesus and a person who embraces the Christian faith), the more I am at peace with the idea that we don’t know everything [...]

This life…

The First Green of SpringDavid Budbill

Out walking in the swamp picking cowslip, marsh marigold, this sweet first green of spring. Now sautéed in a pan meltingto a deeper green than they were alive, this green, this life,

harbinger of things to come. Now we sit at the table munching
on this message from the dawn which [...]

Snow…

Softly, gently in the secret night,
Down from the North came the quiet white.
Drifting, sifting, silent flight,
Softly, gently, in the secret night.
White snow, bright snow, smooth and deep.
Light snow, night snow, quiet as sleep.
Down, down, without a sound;
Down, down, to the frozen ground.
Covering roads and hiding fences,
Sifting in cracks and filling up trenches.
Millions of snowflakes, tiny [...]

Girl on a Tractor…

I knew the names of all the cows before
I knew my alphabet, but no matter the
subject; I had mastery of it, and when
it came time to help in the fields, I
learned to drive a tractor at just the right
speed, so that two men, walking
on either side of the moving wagon
could each lift a bale, walk [...]

Living between the two Advents…

Merciful God, who sent your messengers the prophets to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salvation: Grant us grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins, that we may greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ our Redeemer; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now [...]
