The line in the sand

September 17, 2010

God who is Love
we come to you as image bearers
as ones who imperfectly
image your kind of Love

we who are uncomfortable with talk about sex
or sexuality, even as we produce ample broods
and raise them in rigid households
of love and unlove

we who make family god
who are so tight with our own clan
from the County, that we unknowingly
shut out those who are different
thinking we are better than most
with our clean living
hard work and simple ways

we who see the world in black and white
who zealously parse scripture
and (in love) name the sins of others
homosexual
immigrant
woman
indigent
liberal

we who (in love) carry lists
and use rhetoric that cuts
from our lives
those on our lists and
those who do not
tow the line

we who say things like
“we believe totally different things” and
“one of us has to go”
use language that gives us power
to save or to damn
to welcome or to exclude
to preserve the righteous sameness of us
even as we feel a mixture of pity and loathing
for those who are not us

we are angry
we are fearful
we are watching
watching what will happen at Pittsburgh
the line in the sand

God who is Love
we come to you as image bearers
as ones who imperfectly
image your kind of Love
